“Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.”
The fall of Instagram
Imagine, it’s early in the morning, you just woke up to attack a typical work day, you grab your phone spontaneously, and you start browsing Instagram…
People looks happier than you
“Sally is on vacation at Hawaii and Vanessa just got married.”
“Mike just came back from his road trip in South America”
“Davis just launched his new tech company in San Francisco”
And there you are wondering if the milk bottle in your fridge is still good to drink or you would die in horrible pain if you eat your cereals with it.
I don’t want this article to be a rant against social medias and how technology changed our lives. I don’t believe that technology is necessarily bad or necessarily good.
But here’s the thing…there is a science there.
The science behind Instagram
You need to understand something, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook…All these platforms are designed by people who spend their day trying to find out a way to keep you on their apps.
“Social media has been described as more addictive than cigarettes and alcohol, and is now so entrenched in the lives of young people that it is no longer possible to ignore it when talking about young people’s mental health issues”
Which means that social media has the same effect on us as alcohol or drugs, it gives a that dopamine rush whenever someone cares about us, likes us, comment our posts
And nobody, absolutely nobody taught us how to use wisely, or how to be cautious about it.
I used to love Snapchat, now I’m more on Instagram. I love how spontaneous you can be by filming and sharing what’s going in your life few seconds with others.
I still have hilarious videos from my previous travels that I still watch to cheer me up (Diamond will understand this 😉).
IMAGINE…you are sitting in a coffee shop at 6pm, a Sunny Sunday afternoon, you are having a great conversation with your friend, and you suddenly see 5-6 girls/boys sitting, and all of them are watching their phones, in a very mysterious and singular way.
They don’t talk to each other, they are staring at their phones, filming themselves with filters, putting that “3-second-fake-smile” on their face and raising their shoulder to give a more “I-don’t-care-about-the-camera-but-I-do-a-little-bit” pose. All of this finishes in a lame post on instagram or snapchat with a quick quote about how you should “be happy”.
Understand that people who post regularly are paid to do so.
Remember that this girl who has 0 body fat is paid to look fine 24/7 and you are not supposed to put pressure on yourself just to match the “instagram standards”.
99% of the stuff you see on Instagram is fake.
“The worst loneliness is to not be comfortable with yourself.”
Let me give you an example with @ChessieKingg, she is one of the first influencer who spread the awareness about the danger of social media and the impact it has on your well being
“Even at my smallest, when I was training the most & eating the least, I just wanted to cover up my body because it wasn’t my idea of ‘perfect.’ Now my priority is to be happy and comfortable in my own skin, and today I appreciate my body and what it does for me. We were not made to be Barbie dolls who LOOK insanely good 24/7, we were made to be HUMAN and we should all be allowed to FEEL insanely good 24/7. Come at me keyboard warriors, you can say what you want but nothing will knock me down.”
There is only one story : Yours
“Because one believes in oneself, one doesn’t try to convince others. Because one is content with oneself, one doesn’t need others’ approval. Because one accepts oneself, the whole world accepts him or her.”
People really struggle with being “REAL” with themselves.Take your ego out of the equation.
Where is the real ? Show me the real, Show me your struggle, Show me what’s wrong, be authentic.
I’m not saying that you should use Instagram as a platform to complain, I’m saying that you don’t have to create “ a new you” to please followers (that don’t care about you anyway).
We live in a society that promotes image and beauty, that’s a fact, but you can have so much more added value by giving people the authenticity of your story, it’s not about displaying fake happiness, it’s about offering true helpfulness.
Oh and by the way…If you feel that you are not successful enough because you have a weak Instagram…Don’t ever forget that this little squirrel has more followers than you.
